Bernadette Marie Harker, aged 90, of Farmington, WV, passed away peacefully with her family by her side at WVU Medicine Fairmont Medical Center on January 1, 2025. Born in Dunbar, PA, on March 6, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Mary Bell.
Bernadette moved to Fairview, WV, at the age of 8 and graduated from Fairview High School and Fairmont State University with a teaching degree. She began her teaching career in Norwalk, Ohio, and later moved to Michigan, where she taught in the Avondale school system. Her dedication to education and sports was recognized when she was inducted into the Hall of Fame on September 15, 2023. She was a passionate advocate for girls' sports, coaching the 1972 varsity girls basketball team to an undefeated season.
In 1975, Bernadette married Bill Harker in Michigan and soon returned to Fairview, WV, where she continued her teaching career at Fairmont Senior High School as a physical education instructor until her retirement in 1994.
Bernadette is survived by her sister, Rosemary Bell Tennant of Fairview, her brother Albert Bell of Morgantown, her special niece Erica Moscufo and husband Mike, and her dear classmate Poochie Parker Bateman. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Bill Harker, her brother Bob Bell, and her sister Gloria Jean.
Bernadette was a devoted Catholic and enjoyed attending mass. She was an avid sports fan, always cheering for the Mountaineers.
In accordance with her wishes, a private ceremony will be held for family members at Domico Funeral Home on January 18, 2025, at 9 AM, followed by a Catholic Funeral Liturgy at 11 AM at Saint Peter's Catholic Church, 1304 Mill Street, Farmington, WV, with Father Binu as celebrant. Entombment will take place at a later date at Saint Mary's Peace Garden Mausoleum.
The family extends their gratitude to the staff at John Manchin Assisted Living for their care and compassion during Bernadette's stay.
