Shaw
Oct 27, 1935 — Jan 20, 2020
Charles "Charlie" Shaw, 84, of Fairmont, passed away Monday, January 20, 2020 after a brief illness. He was born in Fairmont on October 27, 1935, son of the late Harry Shaw and Mary Cramer Shaw.
He graduated from West Fairmont High School in 1954. He enlisted in the United States Navy Reserves during his senior year of high school, in 1953. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, stationed in Okinawa, Japan, 1954-1958, and worked as an aircraft mechanic. He graduated from The Bailey Technical Diesel School in St. Louis, Missouri in 1962.
After serving for the Navy, he worked as a telegraph operator for the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad. He was a retired machinist from Soles Electric. He was a member of the VFW Post 629, American Legion, Eagles Club, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Historical Society, and Sportsman Square Circle Club of Marion County. He was a great enthusiast and historian of steamboats, trains, and airplanes. He had a love for music and played many different brass and string instruments. He became a member of the Navy Bugle Corp. in 1953. He was an avid reader, enjoyed hunting, fishing, collecting antiques, and restoring antique cars and motorcycles. Charlie was a wealth of knowledge about anything you wanted to know and was a fascinating storyteller. Charlie adored his times with his granddaughter, Abigail. They had a mutual love of music and reading books. They often played the trumpet together, talked about music, and swapped books about anything to do with history.
Charlie is survived by his daughter-in-law, Cathy J. Greco Shaw; granddaughter, Abigail Nicole Shaw, both of Fairmont; and nephew, Jeffrey Edgell, of Florida.
In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by his son, Don Richard Shaw; sisters, Patricia A. Edgell and Carolyn E. Shaw; and brother-in-law, Paul Edgell.
