David Waid Cooper, 75, of Fairmont WV went home to be with the Lord on May 27, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born December 3, 1949, in Petersburg, WV, he was the son of the late Perry John Cooper and Dora Alice Cooper.
David is surrounded by the love of his life and devoted wife of 50 years, Judy O. Cooper, two sons, Chadwick David Cooper of Fairmont, and Courtney Waid (Amy) Cooper of Morgantown, and Cassandra Ann Cooper of Fairmont. He was the proud grandfather of six grandchildren: Carter and Colston, (Courtney) Cooper, Cayden and Chloe, (Chadwick) Cooper and Cooper and Chandler Urse (Cassandra). He is also survived by his brother, Bobby Allen Cooper and his wife Carolyn of Petersburg, WV; and a sister, Ethal Ann Williams and her husband Ronnie of Elkins, WV.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Rella Rhodes, Arvella Vance and Ray Cooper of Mouth of Seneca.
Upon graduation from Circleville High School in 1967, he enrolled at Fairmont State College and lettered four years under Coach Joe Retton. Dave was the chief driving force in the Falcons' four-year record of 108-15 during his career. He was selected All-WVIAC his junior and senior years, averaging 19.9 and 21.0 points per game respectively. In addition, Dave was selected first-team NAIA All-American, second-team Associated Press Small College All-American. He was also the West Virginia State Amateur Athlete of the Year in 1971.
David graduated from Fairmont State in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education and Social Studies and became the Basketball coach at Petersburg High School. He obtained a Master's degree in Physical Education from West Virginia University in 1978.
Dave came to Fairmont after serving as Principal at Petersburg High School in Petersburg, W.Va., for 12 years.
Upon his retirement, Dave worked as a realtor for Floyd Real Estate, under Diane Floyd.
Besides Dave's accomplishments, his love for Judy, his children and grandchildren's athletics were top priority.
In his final words, he left a message for Judy, "I'll be waiting for you."
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to Fairmont State University. Foundation for the David Cooper Basketball scholarship Fund.
There will a Celebration of Life later in Fairmont and Petersburg, WV.
