Obituary

Donnie Ray Retton, 59 of Fairmont WV passed away on Sunday, December 29. He was born August 10, 1965, to Ronnie and Lois (Prozillio) Retton. Donnie was raised in a large, competitive family, which fostered his passion for sports and competition. As a youngster, Donnie was involved in numerous sports activities in the community. He participated in Fairmont Little League and FOP Colts Football. Donnie won trophies at Punt Pass and Kick competitions and was a national finalist in the ELKS Free Throw Competition.

Donnie attended Fleming Grade School, Miller Junior High, and Fairmont Senior High School (FSHS). While at FSHS, Donnie continued his love of sports, as he was a member of the Polar Bear Baseball and Football Teams. Donnie was also a member of the National Honor Society and graduated with top honors with the class of '83. Following high school, "Motz" as he was affectionally called, attended Fairmont State College (FSC). He was a dual sport athlete for the Falcon Baseball Team and Tennis Team (a feat not too many would be able to do).  You could also find "Motz" at the Nickel dominating the "ping-pong" tables.

Following his college graduation with honors and a B.A. in Education, Donnie began his professional career as an educator at Miller Junior High School, then he taught at Dunbar Middle School. He later obtained his master's degree in special education at West Virginia University to further his commitment to education and the students of Marion County.  Most recently he was a faculty member at the Barnes Learning Center where, he formed many long-lasting relationships including close friends Tim Slamick and Travus Oates.

Donnie's first coaching job was the Miller Junior High girls' basketball team.  He and his brother Ronnie started the girls' volleyball program at FSHS. Donnie also coached baseball with his great friend Steve Naternicola at FSHS for 18 years which lead him back to coaching Baseball at his alma mater Fairmont State. Most recently he was a member of the FSHS football coaching staff.  Donnie shaped and mentored generations of young athletes.

Donnie was also involved in Marion County Parks and Rec youth tennis program giving lessons with Craig White.  He also played in the Fairmont Tennis league for many years at the #1 position. Donnie was an avid softball player, winning a state slow-pitch championship with his team "Watson" and was named MVP of the tournament.  He was also a member of the Fairmont Phillies semi-professional baseball team in the Fayette County Baseball Summer League. His love for competitiveness continued, as he hosted a "ping-pong" club at his home with many of his close friends.

Donnie is survived by his mother, Lois, and his siblings Ronnie (Darla), Shari, Jerry, and Mary Lou. Donnie poured his heart into his relationships with his nieces and nephews, cheering them on and creating unforgettable memories.  From wiffle ball games to catching tadpoles and salamanders, he made every moment special. Some of the fondest memories of his nieces and nephews included being frightened by his Halloween masks and playing the purse trick, always finding ways to make them laugh and feel loved.  His support extended beyond the adventures by attending their sporting events and encouraging their academic pursuits. His pride in their successes was immeasurable, and his legacy lives on in the lessons he gave them all.  They include Drew (Cindy), Jaci (Jake), Karli, Wittlee (Matt), Tanya (Will), Brett, Ronnie, Ashley, Shayla (Wyatt), McKenna (Braden), Skyla, and Emma. Donnie was also blessed with many great nieces and nephews, and many other cousins whom he cherished.

Also surviving Donnie are his Aunt Pam and Uncle Frank Washenitz, first cousins Joni, Tammy, Lisa, Becky, and Frankie. Additionally, he is survived by his Aunt Gloria and Uncle Howard Straight, first cousins Kendra, Chris, Ben, and Ann. He is also survived by his first cousin Bruce Wilson, while another first cousin, Tera Wilson Russell, preceded him in death. Donnie also leaves behind close friends, Chris Neptune and Greg Colebank.

Donnie was Catholic by faith.  At this time there will be no visitation or funeral services. We understand that many loved and cared for Donnie deeply. Instead of a traditional service, we encourage everyone to honor Donnie in your own personal way, whether through a quiet moment of reflection, sharing a memory, or doing something meaningful that reminds you of him.
