Doris Jean
(Satterfield) Swaim
Aug 3, 1930 — Oct 10, 2025
Doris Jean (Satterfield) Swaim, born August 3, 1930, in Fairmont, WV, to Wilbur Satterfield and Kethleen (Beverage) Satterfield, died October 10, 2025 at the War Memorial Extended Care Unit in Berkeley Springs, WV, where she lived and was dearly loved for her last two years.
She proudly graduated high school from West Side High in Fairmont, WV. Soon after, she married her high school sweetheart, Richard (Dick) Swaim and with him, raised four sons, Larry, Mark, David, and Donnie. She was a caring and loving wife and mother, but also prided herself in contributing to the family by working at Sauro's Cleaners.
She and Dick enjoyed an active social life with the Elks' Club where they attended many social functions and were known to enjoy dancing together in perfect time. Doris enjoyed all types of music, but was especially passionate about swing and big band as her father was a drummer in a swing band and music was a central part of her childhood. After her husband's passing, Doris continued to be active in the Ladies of the Elks, including volunteering for Bingo Nights and spearheading various charity drives.
When not volunteering, she loved to read, watch movies care for her yard, swing, and spend time with her grandchildren. And she loved to laugh, telling some of the best and spiciest jokes you have ever heard. She also loved her West Virginia Mountaineers and could be found watching any football or basketball game she could find with a cheer to tsk, tsk, tsk… depending on the performance.
She lived most of her life in Fairmont, but moved away twice in her life. The first time to Detroit, MI for Dick's Employment but they moved back quickly as they longed for the hills of West Virginia. Then in her 80's she moved in with her son, Mark and his wife Cindy, to Winchester, Virginia to improve her safety. They all eventually moved back to West Virginia to Berkeley Springs where she lived the final years of her life, including her final two years at War Memorial ECU where she was further cared for and loved by the staff for her ever-ready smile, outlandish stories, and joyous nature.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her step father, PJ Dodd; brother, Don; two sons, David and Donnie; sister-in-laws; and brother-in-laws. She is survived by sons, Larry (Vikki), Mark (Cindy), sister-in-laws, Barbara Fox and Barbara Satterfield. Mark and Cindy's children, Marcus (Megan) Swaim with sons Chance and Jackson and Lindsey (Andrew Marquez) with sons Theo and Dorian. Larry and Vikki's son James (Courtney) Dove with James Jr. and Madison. And David's daughter Annie Swaim. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
