Frank Kanios, 91, of Fairmont, passed away Thursday, January 25, 2024. He was born March 1, 1932, a son of the late John and Leokadia Kanios.
Frank proudly served as a Corporal in the US Marine Corps. He participated in action against the enemy in South and Central Korea with Easy Company, 2nd Bn. 5th Marines, First Marine Division FMF, Korea and was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 2 stars and the UN Service Medal. Later, he was a Drill Instructor and Rifle Coach at Parris Island, SC and received the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation.
Frank is survived by his sister, Gertrude Senchina of Spelter, sister-in-law, Dorotha Kanios of Fairmont, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by his longtime companion, Mary Hanson of Scottsdale, AZ, with whom he made his home for a majority of his life; and siblings, Janina Bernardo, Wenceslaus Kanios, Mary Vanet, Albina Lemanski, Edmund Kanios, Stanislaus Kanios, and an infant brother, Kasmier Kanios.
To honor his wishes, Frank will be cremated. A graveside service with Military Honors will be held at a later date at Holy Cross Cemetery, where he will be interred beside his parents.
The family wishes to thank Fr. Kishore Varaparla and Sr. Stella Cronauer for their assistance during their time of need.
