Gerhard
Miller
May 7, 1927 — Dec 18, 2022
Gerhard Miller of Fairmont, West Virginia, passed away on December 18, 2022. He was 95 years old. Gary, as his friends and family called him, was born to Gertrude (née Seivers) and Conrad ("George") Miller in the Bronx, NY on May 7, 1927 and grew up in Bronxville. After a stint in the Navy as a corpsman (medic) in World War II, he met his wife, Doris Miller (née Jorgensen) in Yonkers, NY, when she winked at him at a skating rink. Gary whistled back, and they were married on October 15, 1948.
Together, Gary and Doris built a loving family with five children. They moved to Bath, NY in 1954 for Gary to take a job with Westinghouse, and then relocated to Fairmont in 1969, when Gary took a promotion to divisional plant manager. He worked for 30 years at Westinghouse (later North American Phillips) and retired in 1984. After Doris passed away in 1987, Gary was with his second wife, Julie Kabulski, from 1988 until her death in 2013. Gary was a member of long-standing at Grace Lutheran Church.
Gary was known by those he loved as a hard worker, a loving father, a lifelong learner, and a gifted storyteller with an earthy sense of humor. A lover of adventure and the great outdoors, Gary built lasting memories with his children on family camping trips, and in his retirement he and Julie traveled throughout North America in a pickup truck outfitted with a sleeping roll in the bed. He had strong opinions on nearly everything in life, including food, wine, physical fitness, vitamins, KOA campgrounds, beekeeping, faith, and politics. He enjoyed long conversations on all these topics and more.
Gary is predeceased by both Doris and Julie, as well as his daughter Karen Panelli. He is survived by his children: Gary Miller of Durham, NC; Susan Wasik, of Cummings, GA; David Miller, of Rio Rancho, NM; and Carolyn Novak of Belefontaine, Ohio. Gary is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. He will be missed.
