Obituary

Jennett Cunningham Hood Godby passed away on August 3, 2023, at Fazio's Elder Care in Monongah, West Virginia.  She was born April 17, 1930, in the old Fairmont Hospital on Gaston Avenue, behind the (then) Post Office in Fairmont.  Jennett was daughter to the late James Glenn and Mada Cunningham Hood, of Cunningham Run near Baxter, West Virginia.  She is preceded in death by her brother, James Hood and sister-in-law, Bonnie Jean Hood of Fairmont, West Virginia. She was also preceded in death by William Andrew (high school classmate) of Morgantown, WV.

Jennett attended grade school at White School on Locust Avenue in Fairmont and graduated from Morgantown Senior High School in 1948, where her accomplishments included editing their Senior Yearbook, the Mohigan.

After High School, Jennett studied nursing at West Virginia University for 2 years, joined Alpha Delta Pi sorority, and worked summers as a nurses' aide at Mon General Hospital, Morgantown, WV.

She married Robert Lee Godby (1928-1989) in 1950.  Back then WVU had a policy that a married woman could not continue to study in their Nursing program and Robert had been accepted into the Veterinary Medical School at Oklahoma State College, so they moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma, and started raising a family while Robert completed Veterinary Medical School.  Robert graduated in 1958, and they moved back to his hometown (Oak Hill in Fayette County, West Virginia) where Robert started a veterinary medicine practice.

While in Oak Hill, Jennett worked as a secretary at Long-Airdox for several years, before she retired and moved back to Fairmont in 1992.  Many who knew her may remember that Jennett was a volunteer at Fairmont General Hospital (every Wednesday) in the Imaging Department for twenty-three years.

Jennett was a member of First Baptist Church of Fairmont and served with Church Women United Club as treasurer for many years. Jennett helped with Wednesday night service, Vacation Bible school and various other outreach services sponsored by the Church.

Jennett is survived by three children, four grandchildren, and one (almost two) great-grandchild.  Her children are Michael Wilson Godby of Wadestown, West Virginia; Lee Ann Godby of Grafton, West Virginia; Carol Jean Godby of Sherrills Ford, North Carolina.  Her four grandchildren are Kathryn Ryan Tucker Austin (Benjamin) of Atlanta, Georgia; Anna Rebecca Tucker White (Rick) of Point Marion, Pennsylvania; Benjamin Michael Brown of New Castle, Pennsylvania; and Zachary Thomas Brown of Winston Salem, North Carolina.  One grand-baby, Henry Gray Austin (Atlanta, Georgia) and another due this month to Anna and Rick White. Jennett is also survived by twin nieces, Royce Hood of Tampa, Florida and Barbara Hood of Baxter, West Virginia.

Family would like to recognize the staff and administration at Fazio's Elder Care for their outstanding care and compassion over the last two years.

The family will receive friends at Domico Funeral Home, 414 Gaston Avenue Fairmont, West Virginia on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. The funeral service will begin at 12:00 p.m. with Pastor Val Gittings officiating.  Interment will take place at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens on Route 19 west of Morgantown.
