Kathern Herndon Loss, 102, of Monongah, passed away surrounded by family on Saturday, July 4, 2026. She was born in Monongah on February 4, 1924, a daughter of the late Ira and Lucretia Herndon.
Kathern was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Monongah. She was employed by Owens Illinois in the late 1940s. She enjoyed roses and animals. She married her husband, Thomas “Bernie” Loss on April 17, 1948.
Kathern is survived by her daughter, Roseann Orwig of Monongah; grandchildren, Timothy M. Orwig and his wife Christina of Millfall, Andrew Thomas Orwig of Rock Hill, SC, and Katie Ann Orwig and husband Chris Nelson of Indianapolis, IN; great grandchildren, Connor Thomas Orwig and Cooper James Orwig; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Kathern was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Bernard “Bernie” Loss who passed away March 4, 2000; her son, Thomas Loren Loss who passed away April 10, 2010; 10 siblings; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family would like to give a special thanks for their care, patience, and kindness to the following: WVU Hospice, especially Jacob, Alysia, and Marissa; caregivers, Rachel Ice, Tim and Christina Orwig, Mary Offutt, Barbara Oleyarski, Kaye and Lloyd White; Ron Pearse; and Muriale’s Restaurant.
The family will receive friends at Domico Funeral Home, 414 Gaston Avenue in Fairmont, on Friday, July 10, 2026 from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. The Catholic Funeral Liturgy will be at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 687 Maple Terrace in Monongah, on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Romeo Bacalso, S.V.D. as Celebrant. The pallbearers will be Jay Pellillo, Donald “Bill” Loss, Chris Nelson, John Wilson, Zach McIntire, and Jody Ice. Interment will follow at Shinnston Memorial Cemetery.
