Leon Maddox Jr, also known as Peanut or Nutz, passed away Friday, March 15, 2024. He was a beloved father, husband, and friend, who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was born January 8, 1961, to Leon and Gladys Maddox of Fairmont, WV, where he spent his formative years. He went on to attend West Fairmont High School and graduated in the class of 1979.
Leon Maddox Jr (Peanut) joined the Marine Reserves in February 1980, the Active Marines in October 1980, the Navy on October 6, 1989, where he had a long, successful career until December 11, 1993. He then went on to enlist in the Army on May 4, 2004 and was Honorably Discharged from the Army and retired in May 30, 2014. During his career, he served in Desert Storm, Iraq, and the Persian Gulf as a medic/nurse. Throughout his career, he was known for his hard work, dedication, and passion for helping others.
Leon Maddox Jr (Peanut) is survived by his loving wife, Joanne Clay-Maddox; his mother, Gladys Maddox; and brothers, Ricardo Maddox and George Lee. He is also survived by his children, Dedreayl Maddox (Shawn), Leon Maddox III, Mityshiau Maddox (Devonte), Jesse Maddox, Shawn Maddox, and Amiaha Maddox; his grandchildren, Leilene Maddox, Abriella Maddox, Marcus Waller, Sa'vin Waller, Deileon Maddox, Joshua Carmack, Darcell Maddox, Leiveon Maddox, and Elise Maddox; nieces and nephews, Tanecia Richardson, Greg Richardson, Jamar Maddox, Ricketta Coakley, DeDreayl King, and Kenya Moore; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Scott and Selma McClure, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Edith Clay, Mr. and Mrs. Austin and Daisy Brown-Clay, Mr. and Mrs. Roddrus and Marsha Brown-Clay, Mr. and Mrs. James Dorothy Brown-White, Mr. and Mrs. Aaron and Cindy Clay, Monica, Tera, Angie, Robbie, Johnny, Dorian, Mike, Ellie, and Jammie; and step-children, Jelani Rayonday Stubbs, Tabitha Clay-Stuck, Leeann Chacon and son Rodddruss, VanQuisha Clay, Vanny Evan-Clay, Gaynell Clay, and James Phillips; and lots of grandkids, nieces, and nephews.
Leon Maddox Jr (Peanut) was preceded in death by his father, Leon Maddox Sr., sisters, Sonya Maddox, Senita Richardson, Francine Moore; aunts, Geneva Springs and Josephine Springs; uncles, Osey Springs, Hershall "Tune" Springs, and Jesse Springs Jr.; and grandparents, Jesse Springs Sr. and Queenie Springs; and his mother-in-law, Joan White Clay.
The family will receive friends at Agape Life Ministries, 410 Morgantown Avenue in Fairmont, on Sunday, March 24, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. The funeral will be at the church on Monday, March 25, 2024 at 12:00 p.m. with Pastors Leo and Regina Riley officiating. The pall bearers will be Charles Linear, Albert York, Shawn Stubbs, Ricardo Maddox, Leon Maddox III, and Jesse Maddox. Interment will follow at West Virginia National Cemetery in Grafton, WV.
