Remembering Mercyre

Mercyre (Mercy) Scott Sumlin was called to her heavenly home on May 14th, 2024, at her home surrounded by loved ones. Mercy was born on October 5, 1937, in Key West, Florida to Roscoe Scott and Ellen Ilene Sands Scott. The duration of her childhood was spent in Key West, Florida.

Mercy attended Douglass High School from grades 1 through 12, and she played girls' basketball until she graduated in 1956.

Mercy married Alonzo Floyd Sumlin and moved to Fairmont, West Virginia. Together they were members of Fairmont's Citizen's Band Radio Community under the handles "Mr. Kool" and "Florida Kid." In the mid-60s, Mercy worked at Westinghouse Electric Corporation where she assembled lightbulbs. She was also known to be a member of the Welfare Rights Organization and an avid bingo player. She was also preceded in death by Amy Parks who was one of her long-time friends.

Mercy is survived by her five children Quinton (Rita) Scott of Dallas Texas, Linda (Timothy) Jones of Lawrenceville, Georgia, Rickie (Markeeta) Sumlin of Winder, Georgia, Kimberly (Lawrence "Scooter") Brooks of Fairmont, West Virginia, and Michael (Kenya) Sumlin of McDonough, Georgia.
