Obituary

Michael Anthony Lupo passed away peacefully on September 20, 2025, surrounded by family. He was 74.

Fiercely intelligent and endlessly curious, he carried both intensity and tenderness in equal measure. A self-taught guitarist, he also composed music, wrote poetry, and played the keyboard. A reader and a thinker, he was as sharp in his opinions as he was compassionate in caring for those he loved.

Mike's creativity and searching mind were matched by an unyielding spirit and a deep well of empathy. He lived in contrasts – fire and gentleness, solitude and connection, intellect and imagination. He found meaning in his music, in words, in philosophy and politics, and in good food – a fresh Country Club pepperoni roll, the search for the perfect Naples-style pizza, or the tuna pasta dish he perfected over time.

He was an avid golfer, taking inspiration from his father's love for the sport and playing regularly with his brother, David. Golf brought out both his humor and his temper – laughter, competitiveness, and even a bent club or two became part of the game.

Mike lived in Nashville during the musical heyday of the 1970s, working at the iconic Exit/In, where he saw legendary artists including Linda Ronstadt, Steve Martin, B.B. King, Tom Petty, and Johnny Cash. He also lived in South Carolina, Washington D.C., and New Jersey before eventually returning to his home state of West Virginia.

He is survived by his mother, Julia Bonasso; and his siblings, David Lupo, Julie Bonasso, F. David Bonasso, Barbara ("Peppe") Seitz, Ann Padula, Mary Shields, Michael Bonasso, Patrick Bonasso, Christine Ezzi, Cecelia Teal, and Russell Bonasso II. He was preceded in death by his father, Nicholas Lupo; and his baby brother, Nicholas.
