Obituary

Nick L. Raspa, 95, of Fairmont, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 8, 2024. He was born on May 16, 1928, the second son of the late Frank and Catherine Raspa of Rivesville. When Nick was only eleven years old, his mother passed away.  As a young man, Nick and his brothers Ralph and Sam helped their father run the State Theatre in Rivesville through the 1950's. This instilled in Nick a lifelong interest in movies and he enjoyed watching and reading about films as well as live theatre and music.

Nick graduated from Rivesville High School in 1945 and Fairmont State College in 1949 with a degree in business. At Fairmont State he met and married the love of his life, Helen Manzo. They had two children, Kathryn and Robert.

In 1952 Nick began working for Prudential Insurance and was a dedicated agent for forty-two years. This included more than twenty years as President of the Insurance Workers International Union. In 1980 he was awarded with the prestigious National Quality Award. He earned Salesman of the Month in August 1981 and again in March 1982. His policy holders admired his knowledge and dedication to their insurance needs. They looked forward to his monthly visits. The children of those policy holders recall his interest in them and his outgoing personality and infectious laugh. Even after his retirement in 1994, his policy holders still asked him for insurance advice and information. They trusted his judgment and knowledge.

Nick was a member of the Rivesville Lions Club beginning in 1955 until the early 2000's. He held several offices with the club. Nick was proud of Rivesville and worked to improve the small town. He was elected to the office of Town Recorder from 1961-1963 and frequently contacted state officials in attempts to raise additional resources for town improvements.

At the urging of his older brother, Ralph, Nick moved his family to Fairmont in 1964 while continuing as a Prudential agent throughout Rivesville, Bellview, and Fairmont. He and his family became members of St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Nick was elected Treasurer of the Holy Name Society and held that office for forty years. He also joined the Knights of Columbus and rose to the rank of Fourth Degree. During his thirty-eight years with the organization, he served for several years as Treasurer. When not working, he and Helen enjoyed movies, traveling, dancing, and visiting with friends and family. Nick traveled to the New Jersey Sea shore and New York City for summer vacations with his family. After retirement Nick became the Tour Director for the Knights.

In addition to his parents, Nick was preceded in death by his brothers Ralph and Sam and their wives as well as several cousins.

Nick is survived by his wife of seventy-three years, Helen as well as their two children, Kathryn Raspa of Fairmont and Dr. Robert Raspa, his wife Jennifer, and their two sons Connan Raspa of Fairmont and Logan and Sarah Raspa of Florida. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

The family appreciates the staff of Sisters Elder Care of Shinnston for their professionalism and kindness during Nick's final months.
