In Loving Memory of Richard Kurt Long
Richard Kurt Long, of Sistersville, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2026, surrounded by his family.
A devoted husband, father, Pap, brother, and friend, Richard was a dedicated provider who always put his family’s needs above his own. He shared most of his life with his beloved wife and best friend, Jacki; the two had been together since early high school, building and sharing their entire lives together. He was known for his quick wit, hilarious personality, and selflessness. He had a special way of making people laugh and was always the first to lend a helping hand. As the family handyman, he could fix anything and always found a way to get the job done; his family knew they could always count on him to show up in a time of need, no matter the situation.
A proud 1981 graduate of Sistersville High School, Richard went on to complete an apprenticeship at Newport News Shipyard and earn an Associate Degree from West Virginia State University. He brought dedication and hard work to every step of his career—from his early days at the Shipyard and Ravenswood Aluminum, to Covestro, where he ultimately retired after many years of faithful service.
Richard was an active member of the Sistersville community. He served as a councilman, was always a friendly, dependable neighbor, and was deeply involved in youth programs, enjoying the opportunity to support young athletes and give back. He loved sports and was especially proud of his time playing football for the Sistersville Tigers, helping the team win a state championship in 1980.
Richard loved all of his children equally, and the unique bonds he shared with each of them were among his greatest joys. Some of his favorite memories were made while hunting and fishing with his son, Kurt. These moments were about much more than the outdoors; they were opportunities to spend time together, share stories, and enjoy the things they both loved. To his daughter Ashley, Richard was her true hero—she knew his word was always true, and he was steadfastly in her corner. As a later-in-life child, Macy shared a deeply special connection with her father through their matching calm personalities and identical senses of humor. They spent many happy hours together dreaming up home projects and talking about her future, sharing a bond that brought immense joy to his later years.
Above all else, Richard was incredibly proud of his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Jacki Long; his children, Kurt (Megan) Long, Ashley Long, and Macy (Kyle) Mason; his grandchildren, Brody and Kaden Long; his sister and sister-in-law, Jane Long and Judy Light; his father- and mother-in-law, Bill and Ramona Williamson; and many other family members and friends who loved him dearly. His memory will live on in all those who were fortunate enough to know and love him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Nancy Long; his grandparents, Louise and Ernie Light, who lovingly raised him; his brothers, Steve, Bobby, and Wayne; his nephew, Jacob; and his niece, Kristen.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the Sistersville Park and Pool in Richard’s memory. Please include “Richard Long Tribute” with your donation and mail it to: Sistersville Park and Pool, 200 Diamond Street, Sistersville, WV 26175
In honor of Richard, a bench will be placed at the park as a lasting tribute to his memory and the community he loved.
Family and friends are welcome to attend a celebration of Richard’s life at Mountain Meadows Farm on October 13 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.
