Rick Matheney, 63, died on December 7, 2018 at his favorite place, home. He is survived by his wife, Maryann; children, Nicole and Scott Bacza, and Ricky Matheney; and his grandson, Vincent.

He is the son of Eileen Matheney of Bellview and the late Charles Matheney.

He is also survived by his sister, Sharon Downey; two brothers, Bert Matheney and wife Kathy, and Donald Matheney and wife Cheryl; sister-in-law, Eva Delovich and Steve Kazmerek; brothers-in-law, Dewey Delovich and wife Adrienne, and Ronnie Delovich, David Delovich, and Anthony Delovich; and many nieces and nephews.

Rick was a graduate of Fairmont Senior High and attended Fairmont State College where he majored in mechanic drawing. He worked in the coal mines for 30 years and for the State of West Virginia as a Mine Inspector for 5 years. He served on the Peabody Mine Rescue Team for 25 years, winning numerous competitions including the national championship in first aide and the West Virginia State Championship. He helped rescue miners in the Upper Big Branch Mine at Raleigh County in 2010. He was certified in security awareness, diesel instructor training, Fire Boss, and EMT.

During his life, he coached little league baseball, parks and recreation softball, winning tournament titles. He loved football, basketball, boating, snow skiing, concerts, and county music. He also lived for hunting and fishing and traveled to Colorado, Montana, Ohio, and West Virginia. He often said the outdoors was like a religious adventure which gave him peace and serenity. Last week, during a hunting trip in Ohio, he killed an 8 point deer. He had many plans for retirement: traveling around the country and trailer camping in every state camp site, and teaching his grandson to hunt and fish one day.

He was a devoted husband and father who took care of his family, and he will be missed beyond words.

The family will receive friends at Domico Funeral Home, 414 Gaston Avenue in Fairmont, on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be on Thursday, December 13, 2018 at the Highland Avenue United Methodist Church, 204 Highland Avenue Fairmont, WV 26554, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Karen Brown officiating.
