Robert B. Starkey, 93, of Fairmont, passed away suddenly and peacefully Sunday, November 28, 2021. He was born in Flatwoods, WV on August 9, 1928, a son of the late Alberta and Manda Starkey.
Robert, known as Bob to his friends and Uncle Bob or Unkie to his family, was a country man who enjoyed tinkering on the farm, helping family and friends, and sitting in the rocking chair visiting with family and friends. He enjoyed listening to music and square dancing with his wife, Corabell. He also enjoyed training and riding horses with his niece, Melissa, who he raised and loved like a daughter.
Robert was a Sergeant in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was employed by the Board of Education as a bus driver and mechanic. He enjoyed camping and hunting at his old homeplace in Braxton County.
Robert is survived by his niece, Melissa Hinerman and her husband Will; a brother, Ray Starkey and his wife Pauline daughters, Pam and JoAnn and families) of Charleston; and many nieces and nephews, Gay Covey and her husband Roger (daughters, Traci and Christina and family) of Braxton Country, Lou Sanders and her daughter Candi of Ohio, Jerry Boling and his wife Linda (daughters, Alicia and Meredith and families) of Grafton, Joyce Boling, Jerry Starkey and his wife Carolyn and family, David Starkey, Don Garber and his wife Cynthia, Bob Starkey and his wife Pippi, Denver Garber, Jerry Garber, and Dayton Garber, Ezra Jr. and his family, Shirley and Bob Casto and family, and other nieces and nephews; a brother-in-law, William "Bill" Gillespie; and sister-in-law, Sharon VanGilder.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Clora Bell Starkey; his siblings, Virginia Valentine and her husband Frank, Edna Casto and her husband Jack, Clara Boling and her husband Homer, Bessi and her husband Warrick, Ira and Audrey, Dorsey and Mildred, Ezra, Pippi and her family, Bertha, Everett, and Sarah; and his mother-in-law, Edna Payne.
The family will receive friends at Domico Funeral Home, 414 Gaston Avenue in Fairmont, on Friday, December 3, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. He will lie in state at the Mt. Hebron Church on Beamer and Vernon Road outside of Flatwoods on Saturday, December 4, 2021 from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. The funeral service will be at the church on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. with Pastor Harley Mayfield officiating. Interment will follow at the Mt. Hebron Cemetery. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.domicofh.com.
