Obituary

Ruby G. Toothman, age 94, 171 Wisteria Lane, Fairview, died Monday morning, July 7, 2025 at the Fairmont Rehabilitation and Health Center in Fairmont. Ruby died just four days short of her 95th birthday. She was born in a two-story farm house situated on several acres of land on upper Plum Run, Marion County, WV.

As Ruby played in the meadows surrounding the farm, she also learned the valuable skills of cooking, baking, canning, churning butter, and quilting. She also loved gardening and planted one every Spring for more than ninety years!

Ruby is the daughter of the late Arlie E. and Synthia Efaw Toothman. She also was preceded in death by her sisters, Virgie Efaw and Violet (John) Harker, as well as her brothers, Lester "Buck" (Ginny), Joe (Ethel), and Lawrence.

Ruby is survived by a devoted friend and work companion, Zoa Ruth Johnson, who has been "a second aunt" to the Toothman-Harker family for more than sixty-five years. Ruby is also survived by a sister-in-law, Ann Toothman of Fairmont.

Ruby and her siblings attended a one room schoolhouse (grades 1-8) that could be seen from the Toothman kitchen window. Ruby and Violet desired to attend Mannington High School, but could not because there was no bus transportation at the time. Nevertheless, they developed beautiful hand-writing, spelling, and math skills. Ruby did acquire her GED later.

Ruby loved horses, owned them, and loved to ride. She acquired this interest from her father and his brother, Clyde.

Before he owned a horse, Ruby's father, Arlie, arose at 3:00 a.m. every morning, walked ten miles to work at the gas company, and ten miles home afterwards. So, the family appreciated horses.

Ruby was an excellent athlete, having played softball in a league of girls. She was a first-baseman, having played along-side the legendary pitcher, Patty Kuhn, another dear friend.

Ruby lived by the Christian principles of faith, family, and friendship. She was a hard worker and devoted friend.

She began attending the Church of Christ in her early twenties and has been a member of the Pumpkin Center Church of Christ, Fairview, for thirty-five years, where she has acquired many friends.

Her work history includes being a cook and car-hop at "The Ranch," a drive-in restaurant at Blackshere; time at the A&P Warehouse, Professional Maintenance, and Creative Labels.

She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, whom she loved and sought to teach her convictions and values. The younger generation has often referred to her as "The Rubster." They loved her and will play a part in her funeral.

The family will receive friends at Domico Funeral Home - Curry Chapel, 100 Grant Street in Fairview, on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, where the family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Her funeral will be at the church building on Thursday, July 10, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. with Craig Matheny officiating. Following the service, Ruby will be taken to the farm on Plum Run, where she will be buried in the Toothman Family Cemetery on land set aside by her grandfather, Robert Toothman.

As her body is returned home, Ruby has also gone to her eternal home – to a "city where the roses never fade."

Ruby's family wishes to acknowledge and thank the congregation of the Fairview Church of Christ, the Fairmont Rehabilitation and Health Center nurses and staff, and Amedisys Hospice for their compassion and care. Thanks is also expressed to the ladies of the Fairview Church of Christ and the ladies of St. Paul Baptist Church for providing the funeral luncheon.
