Sharon Denise
Zaccagnini
Mar 30, 1956 — Jun 13, 2021
Sharon Denise (Deleruyelle) Zaccagnini, 65, was surrounded by her loving family and friends at her home when she went to be with her Heavenly Father on Sunday, June 13, 2021.
Sharon was born in Fairmont, WV, the daughter of late Fernand J. and Annette V. (Kivlehan) Deleruyelle, of Benton's Ferry, Fairmont, WV on March 30, 1956. She was a 1974 graduate of East Fairmont High School, and a 1978 graduate of Fairmont State College with a B.A. in Education. Sharon had so much love for the homeless and disenfranchised people in her environment. Her passion for offering hospitality was known by all who had the good fortune to spend time with her. Her ministry evolved over the years through various forms, as she always tried to put her Catholic faith into action. Her faith journey eventually led her into a beloved community of faith that helped her realize her strong values of peace, justice, service, and compassion. Through this work, she met her life partner and future husband, Larry W. Zaccagnini. Sharon and Larry were joined together in Holy Matrimony on July 14, 1984, and gave birth to her only child and adored daughter Asher on December 18 th , 1984. Together as they began their family, they were among the co-founders of the Soup Opera and Sobrania, Inc., nonprofit organizations in Fairmont. Sharon eventually pursued her Masters Degree in Social Work, graduating from West Virginia University in 1989.
Always pouring her heart into her work, Sharon's career included teaching in Marion County schools, being a co-owner and partner of Capitol Doors in Fairmont for 20 years, and working with developmentally disabled individuals through local organizations. Sharon shared a love of gardening with her husband - and her love of flowers was showcased each year in her well-landscaped yards, and a bounty of vegetables from their garden were shared with many friends and family members. She also had a passion for traveling, taking pleasure in seeing new places and enjoying the food and culture of different areas of our country and world. Other passions for her were being in nature, music, and baking and cooking delicious food. It was not uncommon for Sharon's house to be filled with sweet and savory smells, as she prepared a meal for her immediate family, and often extended family and friends. Also a committed member of lmmaculate Conception Parish in Fairmont, WV, Sharon participated in many religious and social ministries including her recent role as President of the Ladies' Society. She also felt committed to being charitable, exemplified in ways such as sponsoring foreign children in Central/South America for many years.
Sharon cared endlessly for her family- as a wife to Larry, a mother to Asher, a sister to her siblings, a daughter of her adult parents, and a relative to many others. Sharon also included in her idea of family many close friends and her church community. For these people she offered the blessing of her presence in a very special way. With a resilient spirit, her commitment to those she loved has been full and dear.
Sharon is survived by her loving husband, Larry Wayne Zaccagnini of Fairmont, WV, beloved daughter Asher Leigh Zaccagnini of Asheville, NC, and treasured sisters Mary Ann (Deleruyelle) Ferris of Shinnston, WV, and of Fairmont WV - Helen M. Deleruyelle, Susan L. (Deleruyelle) Hartzell, and Eileen V. (Deleruyelle) (Tim) Layman. Sharon was a devoted Aunt to nine nieces and nephews, 16 great-nieces and nephews, and shared special relationships with a few of these including Joshua R. Jarvis, as well as many others. Sharon is survived by several cousins, two who were especially close, Paula (Deleruyelle)(J.B.) Blumetto, John (Edward) (Vicki) Deleruyelle. She also enjoyed very special relationships with many of her great-nephews and nieces, all of whom will remember her dearly. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her twin brothers, Joseph M. Deleruyelle and Philip A. Deleruyelle, and brothersin-law Anthony (Tony) Ferris and Ira (Rusty) Hartzell.
In fall of 2020, Sharon was diagnosed with terminal primary liver cancer. After receiving immunotherapy and radiation treatments for close to 6 months, it became clear that her body was not responding and that the cancer had progressed to its end-stage. During her final month of life, Sharon received generous care from hospice workers, loving spiritual support from our dear friend Sr. Stella Cronauer, as well as the companionship of many relatives and special friends. During her final days, Sharon also enjoyed quality time with family that included activities such as singing, baking, watching sunsets, visiting with old friends, and sharing stories of fun and special times.
